Cutting Boards and Chopping Blocks

RMK Designs Cutting Board

If you properly take care of your RMK Designs handcrafted cutting boards and chopping blocks you will get a lifetime of use out of it. This is a very simple process that involves keeping the board clean and well-sealed.

Required Items:

Scrub pad

Mild dish soap

Dish Towel (to dry the board)

Howards Butcher Block Conditioner

Towels to apply the conditioner

Gloves (optional)

First Step

I recommend that you start by washing your cutting board with a mild dish soap in warm water. I use a green scrub pad to remove any food stuck to the board. Set aside to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. One important note is DO NOT put a wood cutting board in the dishwasher. This will cause irreversible damage to your boards.

Second Step

After the board is completely dry you can now apply the Howards Butcher Block Conditioner. The conditioner works best when it is heated a little bit. Howard’s Butcher Block Conditioner contains a mix of oils and waxes. One of the waxes is Carnauba Wax which is hard and needs to be softened with heat to properly mix. This also allows for the thinning of the product which increases the depth in which it penetrates. You can achieve this by using a microwave safe bowl to heat some water. It just needs to be warm and not boiling. Place the bottle of conditioner into the bowl for about 10 minutes shaking occasionally. An alternative to heated water is to place the bottle in the sun until it has warmed up a bit.

Once the contents of the bottle look thin apply to the board. I like to use a paper towel to spread the liquid over the entire surface of the board until it does not soak in any more. Once you have achieved this the board is coated well.

Third and Final Step

I let the conditioner sit on the wood overnight if possible. The surface will continue to soak up the coating for a while. The next morning you can wipe the excess off the board and buff the surface to a satin sheen. Re apply as needed when the wood looks dry or if a drop of water placed on the board does not bead up, but instead soaks in.

Spoon and Fork Sets and Wood Tongs

If you properly take care of your RMK Designs handcrafted wooden Spoon, Forks and Tongs you will get a lifetime of use out of them. This is a very simple process that involves keeping the utensils clean and well-sealed.

Required Items:

Scrub pad

Mild dish soap

Dish Towel (to dry the board)

Howards Butcher Block Conditioner

Towels to apply the conditioner

Gloves (optional)

First Step

I recommend that you start by washing your wooden spoon, fork, and tongs with a mild dish soap in warm water. I use a green scrub pad to remove any food stuck to the utensils. Set aside to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. One important note is DO NOT put your wooden utensil in the dishwasher. This will cause irreversible damage.

Second Step

After the spoon, fork and tongs are completely dry you can now apply the Howards Butcher Block Conditioner. The conditioner works best when it is heated a little bit. Furniture

Mahogany Corner Table

If you properly take care of your RMK Designs handcrafted furniture you will enjoy a lifetime use. This is a very simple process that involves keeping the furniture clean and in the proper environment.

Required Items:

Soft cloth dampened with water

Murphy’s Oil Soap

First Step:

When considering placement of your furniture try to place in a location out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the finish on your furniture to turn yellow. It can also darken, discolor or bleach out the natural or stained color of the wood. If you cannot place completely out of the sun light, try to find a location with morning sun as opposed to evening or mid-day sun. If not possible to achieve any of these goals we would recommend covering the furniture with table cloth or other fabric.

Second Step

Using a soft damp, not soaking wet, cloth wipe the surfaces of the furniture to remove any dust or spills. If you do this often you will not have a buildup of dirt. However, if you do find that the dirt or soil buildup is extensive you can use Murphy’s Oil Soap. Follow directions on the bottle and clean the surfaces. Once clean, if needed, wipe with a dry cloth. This is all that is required to keep your furniture clean and looking new.

I never recommend using any furniture polishes. With a good finish you do not need any polishes or creams to protect the finish. One of the risks you face in using these polishes is the breakdown of the finish due to the chemicals that are in these products. Read my blog post about wood care for more information on why not to use polishes.

Boxes and Art Work

Second Step
